Recently, our Kanji elective class at Meko Japanese Language School took a creative turn, offering students a chance to connect with kanji in a deeply personal way. This special class gave students the opportunity to choose kanji that represented their names and create a meaningful piece of art they could keep forever.
Creating a Masterpiece
Each student began by selecting Japanese characters that matched the sounds in their names. These chosen characters also reflected aspects of their personalities and values. They then wrote their selected characters in the bottom-left corner of a Shikishi board—a traditional board often used for calligraphy. In the center of the board, students added meaningful words in Japanese, representing personal goals, core values, or simply words they found inspiring. To complete their creations, they decorated the boards with stickers, adding a unique and personal flair. The finished pieces became a vibrant reflection of each student’s individuality and their journey with the Japanese language.
Immersion Through Art
This class was not only an opportunity to practice kanji but also to immerse students in the language on a deeper level. The Kanji elective classes are always conducted in Japanese, and this special class gave students a chance to express themselves in a way that combined language and art. The result was a meaningful, personalized experience that went beyond classroom learning.
A Lasting Keepsake
At the end of the class, students walked away with their Shikishi boards, a piece of art they could treasure. This creative activity allowed students to strengthen their kanji skills while also making a personal connection to the language. We’re excited to continue offering such enriching experiences and look forward to more opportunities for students to explore Japanese in unique and meaningful ways!
