As of December, 2024, Japan’s Working Holiday Visa program has grown to include agreements with 30 countries and regions—some of which have been updated. Exciting changes include the addition of Luxembourg as the 30th country in the program and a new provision allowing citizens from specific countries, to apply for two working holiday visas in their lifetime. This provides even greater flexibility for participants to immerse themselves in Japanese culture, pursue language studies, and explore diverse work opportunities over extended periods.
New Country Added: Luxembourg Joins the Program
The latest addition to the program is Luxembourg, with an annual cap of 100 visas. This expansion underscores Japan's commitment to broadening its international connections and welcoming a diverse range of participants.
Reapplication Opportunities for Select Countries
In a significant update, nationals from Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Denmark, and Austria are now eligible to apply for the Working Holiday Visa twice in their lifetime. For Canadian and UK citizens, this can mean two consecutive years or two separate one-year stays. For those from New Zealand, Denmark, and Austria, reapplications are allowed for two separate one-year periods. This change provides extended opportunities for deeper cultural immersion and exploration of Japan.
Program Overview
The working holiday visa is designed for individuals aged 18-30 (or younger, depending on the agreement with each country). Participants are primarily focused on holidaying in Japan while having the option to work in non-restricted industries to supplement travel expenses and even pursue Japanese language studies. Participants must adhere to the specific eligibility criteria for their country, such as residing in their country of nationality at the time of application, having sufficient travel funds, and being in good health.
