The new school year at Meko is off to an exciting and meaningful start!

As part of our April orientation, our new students visited the Ikebukuro Disaster Prevention Center to take part in a hands-on emergency preparedness program. For students who have just arrived in Japan, understanding how to respond in emergency situations is an essential part of adjusting to daily life.

During the visit, students learned how to respond to natural disasters such as earthquakes, as well as fires and other emergency situations. The first experience was the smoke evacuation training, where students navigated through a smoke-filled environment designed to simulate a real building fire. They practiced identifying where a fire might be located, planning safe escape routes, and working together to ensure that everyone could evacuate safely.
Students also had the opportunity to experience an earthquake simulator, which recreated the intensity of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. This gave them a realistic understanding of how powerful earthquakes in Japan can be, and how important it is to stay calm and follow proper safety procedures.

Finally, students practiced fire extinguishing techniques, learning how to correctly use a fire extinguisher and respond quickly in the event of a small fire. These practical skills are not only valuable but can be lifesaving.

Through this experience, our students gained important knowledge and confidence that will help them stay safe while living in Japan.
With their training complete, they are now ready to begin their studies this week. We look forward to supporting both our new and returning students throughout the school year as they continue their learning journeys at Meko.
