In a recent update to immigration policy, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency has revised the requirements for obtaining a student visa. In the past, submitting evidence of at least 150 hours of Japanese learning history was sufficient in some cases. Going forward, students will be required to submit evidence of completing a recognized Japanese proficiency test (equivalent to JLPT N5 level). Alternatively, students can complete a written exam and interview conducted by the language school to prove they have N5-level Japanese proficiency.

Why This has Been Implemented
Japanese Immigration is working to control cases of falsified documents and ensure students arrive ready to immerse in Japanese from day 1. Accordingly, 150 hours of learning history is no longer a recognized pathway. Furthermore, student visa applications will be carefully reviewed for document legitimacy.

How to Meet This New Student Visa Requirement
From October 2026, applicants must fulfill one of the following:
Option 1: Provide a copy of a recognized Japanese language proficiency exam certificate. The following proficiency exams and scores are currently recognized by immigration:
JLPT: N5 or higher
BJT: 300+
J.TEST: Grade F/250+ FG level
NAT-TEST: Level 5+
STBJ: 350+
TOPJ: Beginner Level A+
J-cert: Beginner level+
JLCT: JCT5+
PJC Bridge: C- or higher
JPT: 315+ or Elementary 68+
JT: JT5+
S-JEP (JPET): 300+
Option 2: Conduct a written exam and interview with the host language school to demonstrate N5-level Japanese proficiency

What This Update Means for Students
This update is part of a series of updates established by immigration to tighten immigration requirements for student visa and various work visa holders. It signifies tightening requirements and more emphasis on language proficiency for those wishing to establish lives in Japan.
