Last weekend, our students and staff set out for a refreshing spring adventure at Mount Takao, one of the Tokyo region’s most popular and accessible hiking destinations. Nearly 25 Meko students and staff (plus one furry friend!) made the trip to enjoy the fresh air and scenic views just outside the city.

It was the perfect day for a hike, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and vibrant spring colors all around. Trees and flowers were in full bloom, and despite the steep hike, smiles were abundant as well. For many of our students, this was their first time hiking in Japan, making the experience even more memorable.

With its well-maintained trails, beautiful surroundings, and ease of access, Mt. Takao is the ideal place to start. Standing at 599 meters above sea level, Mt. Takao is known for its rich natural environment and is part of the Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park. It attracts millions of visitors each year and offers a variety of trails, temples, and viewpoints, all within about an hour from central Tokyo. There are also a wide variety of hiking trails up the mountain, ranging in difficulty and duration.

Our group made their way up Trail 1, the most direct and beginner-friendly route. Along the way, students enjoyed the mix of nature and culture, passing small shrines, and trying some traditional snacks. After about an hour and a half of hiking, we reached the summit, where we were rewarded with stunning views of Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto mountains.

After taking in the scenery and snapping plenty of photos, it was time to head back down. The hike was a great opportunity for students to connect with each other, experience a different side of Japan, and create lasting memories outside the classroom.
